League Match – Selsdon Junior Eagles 0 – Glebe Lions 4

It felt like the start of a new season having had so many postponements and cancellations over recent weeks. Selsdon had had the same problem and both sides were looking forward to blowing away a few cobwebs.

The lack of football in previous weeks was evident as both teams struggled to find their touch in the opening exchanges. The Lions settled quicker and forced Selsdon with some early pressure from corners. Selsdon then responded and pushed forward for a good 10-minute spell but without a cutting edge. Timing is everything and the despite the Selsdon pressure the boys forced a corner halfway through the first half and took the lead through what seems to be becoming our trademark corner routine. We changed a few personnel to keep the boys fresh and held on to a 1- 0 halftime lead.

At the break we changed the personnel again and kept Selsdon on the back foot, limited them to a few counter attacks, neatly dealt with by our defence. Goals 2 and 3 came though great midfield passing and movement as we stamped our authority on the game. We wrapped things up with a well-worked throw in the dying minutes and ended up worthy 4 – 0 victors.

It was good to watch today boys, a well-disciplined game, played with great spirit, well done!

Let’s take this into the tour and final few league matches.

John

Match Report Sun 13th April 2008

League Match – Glebe Lions 3 – Keston 6

Our first match for over a month due to postponements should have seen the Lions reap revenge on the early season defeat to Keston. Unfortunately the script was changed at this point and short on numbers and without the services of our goalkeeper the 10 boys battled valiantly but were unable to prevent Keston registering the double over us this season.

We started the better of the teams and took an early lead in terrible conditions. The 10 men played great football at times but the conditions did not favour goalkeepers (especially stand in keepers) and Keston scored twice to lead 2-1 at the break.

The second half saw us level at 2-2 and the match looked evenly poised for a while. However Keston sensed they could press the advantage with the extra man and 3 goals in the space of 5 minutes effectively ended the game. Ironically we then enjoyed our best spell pulling it back to 5-3 and then had a goal disallowed for offside. A freak headed goal 5 minutes from time sealed Keston’s victory.

Well battled today lads the football was good at times and whilst the result was disappointing it can be put down to our depleted numbers rather than our ability as a team.

A special mention to Reece for standing in as keeper for the day in difficult, wet, cold and blustery conditions. You stepped up without complaining and stuck to the job for the benefit of the team, well done.

See you all at training

John

Match Report Sun 9th March 2008

League Match - Ifield Edwards 3 – Glebe Lions 3

A slightly longer trip than usual saw the Lions venture out of South London to rural Sussex (well Crawley..) for the league match with Ifield Edwards.

The Lions, slightly depleted on numbers, started brightly, heading home from a corner forced from the first attack of the match. Our hosts however, who only had 10 men on the day, battled hard to get back into the game and were rewarded when we failed to clear a goalmouth scramble on 5 minutes. Despite scoring two further goals from set pieces, the boys never really got going, never managing to make the one man advantage count in open play.

The second half became increasingly frustrating. The game became a midfield battle, with Ifield defending resolutely and playing the counter attack very well, with their lively strikers scoring twice on the break to force the 3 – 3 draw.

Lads – We know we weren’t at our best today so let’s learn from it. We need to compete more in all areas if we are to convert some of our recent draws into wins. We need more desire to win the first ball, make the tackle, win the throw or force the mistake. We also need to be more supportive of each other, and the team, both vocally and by our actions on the pitch. By doing this we can get more control of the game, playing it the way we want to rather than chasing scraps as we did today.

That said, it’s another point and thats now four games unbeaten so let’s build on this next week.

See you at training Friday

John

League Matches

It was the third time this season that these fixtures had been scheduled to be played, this time in the form of a ,Double Banker'. The rain and frost that had cost previous fixtures was replaced with early spring sunshine and it was 'game(s) on.

Match 1

Glebe Lions 0 Oxted & District 0

This was the Lions first outing in a double banker fixture and it was soon clear that the morning?s football was going to be tough and combative against a very lively Oxted side. Oxted started brighter and exploited the wind behind them to good effect, their quick strikers first to everything. The boys held firm and did well to contain them and we were happy to go into the second half 0-0.

The boys responded brilliantly in the second half battling well and not letting Oxted's physical approach intimidate them as it had the first half. We spent most of the 20 minute half camped in Oxted?s half unable to make that final breakthrough despite hitting a post and their keeper making a few good saves. With thoughts of the second game to come we rotated the boys to keep everyone as fresh as possible and the game ended goalless.

Thanks to Darren and Ian for refereeing and running the line.

Match 2

Oxted & District 1 Glebe Lions 1

The second match was always going to be the tougher with both sides feeling they could have won the first. Glebe started the brighter having won the toss and playing with the wind. However, Oxted responded and pushed on hard once again as the physical side came to the fore.

This approach paid dividend after we failed to clear our lines and Oxted took the lead with a close range effort. We shuffled the pack again to get on some fresher legs and the boy?s response was fantastic. Unfazed by the lack of decisions in our favour we took the game to Oxted once again, converting our frustrations with their approach, into action on the pitch, creating several chances.

Our breakthrough came with 10 minutes remaining when a perfectly weighted through ball from midfield caught their defence flat footed. Anticipating the pass our striker timed his run perfectly and ran on to slot home a well deserved equaliser. The boys pushed on again but failed to create any further clear cut chances as Oxted once again exerted their physical game. Despite what seemed an overly long period of stoppage time, the boys held strong and firm and we took another well earned point.

We learnt some good lessons today lads;how to play a double banker;how to stand up to a physical side; andhow to convert frustrations into great teamwork and game play.I was impressed with the team spirit and togetherness, well done. Thanks everyone for their help

Cheers

Match Report 24th February 2008

League Match Moonshot 2 Glebe Lions 2

A return to League action saw the Lions stage their own dramatic comeback this week as the boys fought back from a 2-0 half time deficit to snatch a well earned draw. A very large, bumpy pitch and a strong wind (again) were always going to play their part. Unfortunately we lost the toss and our hosts took advantage of the slope and wind in the first half.

We started brightly creating a couple of chances in the first few minutes, but then Moonshot began to take control and we spent long periods pegged in our own half, happy to only be two down at the break. In the second half we reverted to a more attacking formation to take advantage of the conditions. The boys battled and toiled limiting Moonshot to the occasional breakaway, but we were not able to make the breakthrough ourselves.

However, with 10 minutes remaining our luck changed and the boy?s refusal to give up paid off. A superbly hit corner caught the wind and sailed over everyone, straight into the net. The final 10 minutes saw the boys dig deeper and as our forward line increased in numbers by the minute an equaliser looked likely.

It finally came well into injury time, (we were playing with 6 up front at this stage), when Moonshot failed to clear properly and the ball was hit back across the area and dispatched first time, despite the keeper getting a hand to it. Well done today lads you kept going for the whole game, never giving up against a good side. If we can build on this over the coming weeks we can still achieve plenty this season.

Cheers John

Match Report 10th February 2008

League Shield Semi Final - Tulse Hill B 9 Glebe Lions 6 (AET)

Three days later and I still can?t take it in.

The Lions came out of the blocks for this vital semi all guns blazing and despite the set back of an early goal against the run of play, the lads responded fantastically and we were well worth the 6 ? 1 half time lead with sublime play and deadly finishing.

The second half was a different story, and we lost our self belief and discipline as the physical element of our opponents came to the fore. Despite it still being 6-3 with 10 minutes to go on the real clock, we somehow got pegged back to 6-5, the fifth coming well into injury time. The ref then added what seemed a disproportionate amount of injury time and the inevitable happened, an equaliser with the last kick of the match.

We tried to raise the lads for the twenty minutes of extra time only to suffer another hammer blow 30 seconds in when their striker, for the second time in the match, took out our keeper with a full body charge. How the lad was not red carded I will never know and instead we were penalised by losing our keeper through injury for the whole of the extra time.

The game was effectively over at this point. The cries of, 'shoot - test the keeper', from the opposition's management at every opportunity did little to quell our anger although our supporters remained dignified throughout. Tulse Hill won 9-6 AET.

I would liked to have seen some firmer referreeing and better timekeeping but that said credit to Tulse Hill for their fight back in the second half and we wish them well in the final.

Lads - The important thing is that we all (players, managers, coaches) learn from this and make sure we play for the full duration in every match. Decisions that decide matters can go against you, so when we get in a match winning position, lets finish off the game so these decisions won?t matter.

Let's learn from it, re-group and go again in the league next week.

Cheers

John

:- 3rd February 2008 League Match

Orpington A 2 Glebe Lions 9

Today our visit to Orpington was the third meeting of these sides this season. Having won comfortably on the previous two occasions the boys showed no signs of complacency as we ran out 9-2 victors.

A strong icy wind blew across the perfect pitch and this proved to be a huge factor on the day. Winning the toss we elected to play with the wind, a decision proven correct as we took the lead within a minute. Goals two and three followed rapidly as the wind continued to make life difficult for the Orpington defence to clear their lines and the Lions took full advantage going into half time 6-0.

With the wind so strong we knew the second half would be a different story and as Orpington scored one back we were glad of our six-goal cushion. However, despite completing the second half with only 11 due to illness and injuries we scored the next two goals to effectively kill the game. James (with 4) and Jack both completed fine hat tricks and we ran out comprehensive victors.

Well done today boys. In extremely testing conditions, you remained focussed on the job in hand and fully deserved your victory.

Cheers

John

Match Reports:- 27th January 2008 League

Match Balham Blazers 1 Glebe Lions 2

Today saw the Lions produce arguably their best result of the season so far as we defeated the League leaders on their own ground. The result is all the more pleasing as they have been unbeaten in all competitions so far this season. The match was also a chance for us to avenge our defeat to Balham before Christmas and for a new signing to make his debut.

It was a pleasure to watch, in fine winter sunshine, two teams both trying to play crisp passing football. Balham looked quick and moved the ball with pace on the counter, whilst the Lions enjoyed some early possession without creating too many chances. After surviving a penalty appeal, Glebe made their luck count after 25 minutes when the skipper found himself in space just outside the area and hit a deft looping 25 yd shot over the outstretched keeper to give the Lions the lead.

Buoyed by this breakthrough, the Lions moved up a gear after the break and soon created several good chances to double our lead, the final finish just eluding us. Balham realised they had been let off the hook and pushed forward in search of an equaliser that finally came when a loose ball was rifled home from the edge of the area with 20 minutes still remaining.

The tempo raised as both teams pushed in search of a winner with the Lions having the best of it. We had our own penalty claim turned down and with 5 minutes left on the clock we hit the post after some fine work from the left. It looked as though the game was heading for a draw. However with less that two minutes remaining Balham were reduced to 10 men with the ref showing a red card after a late tackle.

The Lions kept their heads and once again determined work down the left created a cross to the far post, which this time was dispatched into the roof of the net to the delight of both the boys and supporters.

Once again boys you have risen to the challenge and shown what you can achieve.

Well done lads, lets keep the run going.

Thank you to Ian for running the line and all the parents for their continued support.

Cheers John

Match Reports:-
20th January 2008 League Shield Quarter Final

Glebe Lions 1 South Bank 0

The Lions produced a hard fought and determined performance to reach the Semi Final of the League Shield against a big, strong and physical South Bank side.

Right from the first whistle the boys refused to be intimidated by our sizeable visitors whose team contained at least 3 boys approaching 6 foot. They toiled and battled and soon found that our quick passing game was no match for the visitors and we enjoyed lengthy spells in and around their penalty area during the first half - hitting the woodwork twice but failing to make the chances count, whilst limiting South Bank to a couple of unsuccessful breakaways.

At half-time we knew we needed to keep our work rate up and keep to our passing game. The boys dug deep. As time passed it seemed we may be heading for extra time until 15 minutes from time when we got our reward as we broke from defence. Our two front men held the ball up well down the right flank and a deep cross was dispatched home from short range at the far post. The last fifteen minutes were edgy as we lost a player to injury.

However, we reshuffled and adapted with everyone picking up the pace of the game and defending resolutely. Despite some prolonged pressure the only real worry came from a goal ruled out for a definite offside.

The final whistle was greeted with delight and ended what had been a thoroughly entertaining game.

I was immensely proud of each and every one of the boys today. Everyone stepped up to play with passion and desire and you did not let the opposition intimidate you. Most of all you believed in yourselves and your own footballing ability.

Well done, you fully deserve your Semi Final place.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks to Darren and Ian for officiating.

Cheers John

Match Reports:- 13th January 2008

Glebe Lions 5 Orpington A 2

A return to league action saw us chalk up another victory against a gutsy Orpington side as we had done in the league cup earlier in the season.

The Lions started the match the livelier of the two teams and despite narrowly failing to convert an early penalty we took the lead after some smart play through the centre of midfield. After dominating these early exchanges the Lions relaxed and allowed Orpington back into the game. Orpington seized this opportunity well and levelled with around 10 minutes of the first half remaining.

The boys struggled to regain a hold on the game as the windy conditions frustrated our game play. However, after weathering some Orpington pressure we applied the sucker punch shortly before half time as a midfield clearance sliced open the Orpington defence and we were able to neatly convert a breakaway opportunity.

2-1 at halftime we knew we needed the next goal and with the wind behind us this was soon the case and a fourth followed shortly afterwards. A late goal for both sides saw us eventually run out 5 ?2 winners.

Today showed there are times when we need to believe in ourselves a little more. I was impressed by our response today and the team, once again, demonstrated what we can achieve ? well done.

Thanks to Darren for turning out to referee despite Harry?s illness and to Ian (linesman) and the usual net crew.

See you at training on Friday

Cheers

Glebe Lions 5 Sanderstead Athletic B 1

After a long Christmas break this Shield match was the ideal opportunity for the boys to blow away a few cobwebs against a team sitting just one place below us in the league.

The Lions started brightly and raced into an early lead as the boys soon found their rhythm. Excellent interplay through the midfield had a hand in two further goals and we took a 3- 0 lead into the halftime break.

Despite our lead Sanderstead were always a threat and they pulled one back with 20 minutes remaining. However the Lions response was superb and 2 more goals finished off Sanderstead after great work down the right flank.

The final 5 ? 1 score line was fully deserved and a great way to start the year, as was securing a quarter-final place.

Well done boys, you should be proud of your efforts today. Lets hope for a good draw in the next round.

Thanks to Ian for refereeing and everyone else who helped with the nets etc.

Cheers.

Match Reports:-
9th December 2007

Glebe Lions 3 Carshalton Athletic A 2

Today we progressed in the Shield thanks to a gritty, determined performance against a
physical and determined Carshalton Athletic. On a day when most games were postponed the conditions were always going to be difficult.

Carshalton adapted quicker and took an early lead. The boys responded well and we levelled within 2 minutes. A mistake by their keeper gave us the lead after 20 minutes and we dominated the remainder of the half without converting a couple of good chances. We paid the price as Carshalton levelled with virtually the last action of the half to make it 2-2.

The second half became a battle in the middle of the park with both teams pushing hard to find the edge required to push on and win the game. Our chance came with around 15 minutes remaining as we pushed home form close range after a scramble in the penalty area. We then had to hold firm for the last quarter of the game as Carshalton changed their formation and pushed for the equaliser. Our boys dug deep and knew they had been in a battle when the final whistle blew.

Well done boys, we have shown in a very tight match we have the ability to get the upper hand and win the match.

If we want to progress in cup matches like today (especially where the games are so close) sometimes decisions need to be made during the course of a match for the benefit of the whole team and squad. Today was one of those days and hopefully those boys not playing a full part this week will have their chance further on in this and other competitions through the season and will hopefully appreciate the benefits to the wider squad. Back to League action next Sunday for the last match of 2007.

See you all at training on Friday.

Cheers
John

Glebe Lions 6 - Selsdon Junior Eagles 1

The Lions picked up from where we left off last week with a convincing win against Selsdon Junior Eagles.

Having lost the toss we faced an uphill battle in the first half as we came to terms with our new home pitch. However, the Lions response was fantastic as we played some quality football and raced into a 2-0 lead at half time working the ball down both flanks with great effect.

We started the second half slowly conceding a sloppy goal, giving Selsdon some hope, but we soon got into our stride. Crisp passing, movement off the ball and great finishing saw us destroy any hope of a Selsdon comeback and stamp our authority back on the game. It was great to watch the team work hard for each other and every member of the squad played their part in a convincing victory.

Well done to Ryan for a fine hat-trick and James who netted two.

Boys, you were a different class today in every section of the pitch. Once again we saw the benefits of training coming through to a match day. Teamwork, enthusiasm and hard work were evident from everyone - well done!!

A big thank you to Ian for his excellent referreeing debut and to Kevin for running the line.

Keep it up - see you all at training Friday.

Orpington Rovers 2 - Glebe 3

What a difference a week makes! For a start I felt like writing a match report!

Glebe were away to Orpington Rovers this weekend in the League Shield - yes another cup game!

The match was played in difficult conditions - cold and blustery - and this was always likely to be a factor in the result. This was evident right from the start when Orpington Rovers won the toss and chose to change ends and play with the wind behind them. Despite early pressure from the home team, we took the lead with a well worked move from defence to attack, carving open their back line.

Orpington knew they had to raise their game to take advantage of the wind before half time. They managed to utilise their well drilled corner technique and forced home two scrappy goals after we failed to clear.

The half-time team talk was simple - we knew that with the wind behind us, goals would come if we continued to compete and play football as we had done in the first half. The equaliser came after some great play down the right and the winner was a classic counter attacking move, neatly finished.

Well done lads today.

A good response after the disappointment of last Sunday - keep it up and let's raise the standard again next week.

League Cup:- Selsdon Juniors 5 Glebe 'A' 2

The Lions played their second tricky cup tie in
two weeks today against good quality opposition in the shape of Tandridge A's Selsdon Juniors. We started well and competed in every position taking an early lead from the spot after a deliberate handball on the line.

However, Selsdon responded and had levelled within a minute. A second goal for the home team followed and for a while we struggled to cope with their forceful, attacking play. This was compounded after about 15 minutes when our goalie had to be replaced after a very late challenge - not spotted by the referee!

After a quick reshuffle the lads responded positively and we grabbed a well-deserved, well taken, equaliser just before the break. For the first period of the second half we continued positively but our back line and stand-in goalie were finally beaten. At this stage we began to tire and a fourth came for Selsdon with ten minutes left. The final Selsdon goal was a Maradona, hand of god, special - again not spotted by the referee!

That said Selsdon were the better team on the day - good luck in the next round. At least now we can concentrate on the league!

Boys, the last two weeks have been difficult but we have worked hard as a team, and I can see lessons learnt at training starting to filter through into our game play and that is really encouraging. We should take this forward into our league campaign which recommences next week and we will soon return to winning ways.

London Cup 2nd Round - Glebe Lions 2 - VDC Athletic 5

The Lions found themselves drawn against last season's Bexley League Champions in this tough second round tie.

We started the match strongly and for the first twenty- minutes we matched VCD through tight marking, hard tackling and good all-round teamwork. VCD finally broke the deadlock with a well constructed goal. Two further goals followed shortly afterwards - the first a foul on our keeper, but the goal standing, and the second, a penalty. The 3-0 scoreline at the break was slightly flattering as we had created chances of our own - heading just wide after great play down the left and unluckily failing to convert a couple of goalmouth scrambles.

The second half saw the Lions rise to the challenge, never letting their heads drop and although we conceded two further goals we managed to come back and score two late goals of our own.

This was an extremely physical match and at times VCD's approach and gamesmanship rivalled that of any Premiership game. However, credit to the Lions who remained disciplined throughout.

I would like to say how proud of the boys I was today - sticking to their task, playing a new system, never letting their heads drop against, ultimately, very good opposition. If we can show the same desire and attitude next week in our League Cup tie - I look forward to a good game.

Thanks to the match officials - Darren and Ian.

Well done.

Glebe Lions 7 - Orpington A 5

Jack K's hat trick within the first ten minutes
of the game set the Lion's up for a first half which they dominated racing into a 5-0 lead. The football flowed, passing was accurate and the finishing clinical. Orpington, to their credit, battled on and scored an unstoppable goal with another following shortly afterwards. The Lions responded scoring two more goals. At the break the score was an incredible 7-2.

It was, however, a tale of two halves and the Lions were unable to pick up where they had left off. Orpington forced the play and the Lions were unable to find their passing game that had been so effective in the first period. The opposition scored their third at the start of the second half and then netted a controversial 4th shortly afterwards, which saw our Keeper injured, unable to continue. We reshuffled the
team with a stand-in keeper but Orpington continued to press although they only managed to score one more with the game ending 7-5.

The first half showed what we are all about - teamwork, fantastic passing to feet and determination. We must now learn to carry this through the whole game and not lose our heads and our shape when changes are made. We will face tighter matches than this during the season and we can't afford to fade as we did in the second half today.

Keep at it boys - we have again shown what we are capable of and with a little more
consistency for the full duration we will improve!

Parents - thanks for all your help today - much
appreciated.

Cray Wanderers A 2 - 3 Glebe Lions

The Lions returned to winning ways today
thanks to a fantastic hat-trick by Jack S. We started the game well and took an early lead.

The lads had taken on board lessons from last week and were competing in all areas of the pitch. It was good to see the fruits of our training on Friday. We furthered our lead just before the break after a great passage of play from defence to attack. In the second half we picked up where we left off in the first with sustained pressure that saw us win a penalty which we were unlucky not to convert. After continuing to press, Jack S finally competed his hat-trick with a mirror image of his first goal. The final spell of the game saw us tire and London Cup rules meant we had unfortunately used our full quota of subs.

Cray took an opportunity to gain a consolation goal late in the game - this seemed to give them spirit and we conceded a second with only minutes left on the clock. We held firm and ran out 3-2 winners.

Today's match was all about teamwork but unfortunately we were unable to use the full squad (under London Cup rules). Credit must be given to Ryan as we couldn't bring him on but he supported the team fantastically throughout.

Well done Ryan and all the boys who have shown their willingness to listen, learn and improve.

Thanks to Darren for refereeing at short notice and to Ian our newly qualified lino!

Next week sees us in action in the Tandridge League Cup vs Orpington.

Training will be at Bromley FC again this week - Friday 6.00pm prompt.

Well done lads!

Glebe Lions 1 v Oakwood 3

Our 100% start to the season finally came to an end today against a well-organised and competitive Oakwood side. Despite taking an early lead we went into half time all square. (1-1) Though inthe latter stages of the half we enjoyed our best spell and could even have taken the lead but Oakwoods keeper

The second half saw the Lions struggle to come to terms with the Oakwood's strong desire to win the first ball and we were unable to show our full potential for the passing game despite a perfect playing surface. Two late Oakwood goals sealed our fate and Oakwood ran out 3-1 winners.

Today showed the need for us to compete in this division. We
will have to work on our anticipation and strive to be stronger in the air and ensure we win the first ball on more occasions than we did today. However, we did show we can pass the ball and be creative at times.

The next couple of weeks sees us in cup competitions. Let's build on the positives from today and hopefully return to winning ways.

New Beckenham 0 Glebe Lions 12

Another early season win for the Lions saw us comfortably beat a spirited New Beckenham team.

We started the match brightly and moved into a 2-0 lead with only ten minutes on the clock. New Beckenham struggled to contain us and by half time we had increased our lead to 3 - 0. In the second half our passing game really came to the fore and we created chance after chance that were put away by the rampant lions eventually running out comfortable winners. Credit must go to New Beckenham who kept trying to play and didn't let their heads drop and our keeper and defence keeping another clean sheet.

Well done TEAM it just shows what you can do when you get the ball on the floor and play.

Thanks also to Gerry for coming along to watch and support and for his contribution during the match.
Keep it up.

Glebe 3 Ifield Edwards 0

After a great start with the early goal, we had to dig in and hold our nerve as we soaked up some heavy pressure for a good deal of the first half. Credit to the boys as the defence and goalkeeper held tight.

The second half saw the Lions gradually come to terms with the pitch and wind and we began to stamp our authority on the game. Midfield and attack battled tirelessly as we eventually took command and ran out 3-0 winners.

Well done today to the boys and thanks to everyone who helped out and to those who couldn't play due to injury and league clearance but came to support.

Great start to the season today following up on all the hard work pre-season. See you all Friday at training.
