MATCH REPORTS
Glebe Lions v Shelton Athletic
21st February 2010
Just two weeks after Shelton accounted for the Lions in the League Cup they were meeting again but this time in the league. The cup game had been so tight it was not possible to split them in normal time but Shelton Athletic deservedly won in extra time. Would this encounter be as close? The Lions started without Nicholas and Owen and had Cameron, Christian and Jonathan as subs. The rain had subsided and the sun was shining on both teams as the whistle blew. Glebe were clearly up for this game and before Shelton (SA) knew what was happening they had the lead. Brendan and Harry played in Jake out on the right and his master blaster strike flew into the back of the net. 1 0. SA were on the back foot and the Lions kept pressing their midfield and defence, not allowing them to settle into any rhythm. For the first ten minutes SA were hemmed into their own half as Brendan, Kimathi and Jack remained strong in the tackle. Harry and Kieran hugged and worked the flanks to good effect and Jake was always a danger in the hunt for further goals. SAs first real chance came after 11 minutes when they had a shot blocked and the second rolled wide of the left post. Glebe were passing the football around on a wet but good surface seeking the elusive second goal. The Lions defence of Dion, Luke, Martin and led by the inspired Ryan denied SA another sniff at an equaliser until 24 minutes had gone. They went route one sending a high ball out to the right and the volley shot was taken by a well positioned Elliot on his post. On the stroke of half time the Lions looked to double their lead. Brendan drove the ball out to Harry on the right who hit a superb effort over the keeper but agonisingly inches wide of the left post. The half time score did not do justice to the rampant Lions. HT 1 0. The rain then returned with a vengeance producing atrocious conditions for players and fans alike. For the restart Cameron, Christian and Jonathan replaced Dion, Jack and Jake. Again the Lions started the liveliest with Harry finding Jonathan who narrowly missed repeating Jakes feat of scoring within two minutes of the whistle. Eight minutes gone and Brendan staked a claim for goal of the season. Christians short pass released Brendan on a controlled run that avoided the tackles of four defenders. Finding himself clear on goal he launched a shot that had goal written all over it. 2 0. It was tough going for both teams in cold heavy rain but the Lions adapted better by passing the ball to feet. Harry and then Jack had efforts on target held by the SA keeper. Twenty minutes into the half Jonathan thread the ball through to Brendan and after avoiding the attention of a defender took a calming breath and finished with style. 3 0. Luke, Martin, Cameron and Ryan maintained a solid wall in front of Elliot but after 23 minutes Elliot he was equal to the shot out on the right. The result was beyond doubt when a corner from Harry was met by the rising Jack, on for Kieran, and he headed beyond the outstretched goalies arms. 4 0. Dion, back on for the last few minutes, went on a run and had an eye only for goal as he thumped the ball but was denied by the keeper. SA never gave up and had Elliot dropping like a stone with a strike from the left. They used the same route a minute later and seemingly had the ball on its way to the back of the net. With Elliot beaten Luke stuck out a leg to push it out but the ball was hit straight back at goal and from nowhere Dion slid across the line to divert it for a corner. In added time SA grabbed a consolation with a sweet strike that lifted over Elliot and into the roof of the net. 4 1. The game ended with the Lions again on the attack. FT 4 1. This was an outstanding display by 14 Lions who outplayed a quality team in all departments.
West Wickham v Glebe Lions U11
14th February 2010
The Lions defeated West Wickham (WW) in the reverse fixture 8 1 earlier in the season but for this game were without Nicholas and Brendan.
Both teams spent the first few minutes testing the pace and power of their opponents. Three minutes gone and Martins through ball was almost chased down by Christian but the WW keeper won the race. Jack and Jakes build up found Christian in the penalty box but the WW were quick to block any thought he had of scoring an early goal. The boys in black and red turned defence into attack when Christian split the WW midfield and Jake forced a corner when the keeper pushed away his low shot. He soon got his just reward after Cameron hit a volley that the keeper did well to deflect up onto the crossbar. It fell kindly to Jake who directed it into the back of the net. 0 1. Minutes later Kieran steered the ball through a crowded midfield for Jake to hunt down but his marker stuck to him like glue allowing the keeper time to nip in first. Glebe continued to pile on the pressure as the goalie spilled a fine drive from Jack and Kimathis follow up was blocked for a corner. From the dead ball Kimathi was unlucky to see his strike swerve the wrong side of the right post. The inevitable soon arrived as Kimathi fought and won in the centre of the park and played one short to Jake. He ran down the right touchline and launched a shot at goal giving the keeper no chance. 0 2. Two minutes later and it was three nil. The WW goalie kick from hand was swallowed up by Martin. As the keeper retreated to his line Christian in space collected the ball and swept it into the goal. 0 3. The back line of Cameron, Ryan, Luke and Dion were looking comfortable and dealt with the WW forward threat. Kieran, Jack, Kimathi and Martin were terrier like and never let their counterparts settle. Jake and Christian were creating chances and making the most of them. HT 0 3. On came Harry, Jonathan and Owen for Martin, Dion and Christian. The tempo for the first ten minutes dropped from the level of the first half and produced only two shots of note and they were from a resurgent WW team which required Elliot to be on high alert. The Lions were now facing a resolute WW defence epitomised in the thirteenth minute when Ryan set Kieran free. He lifted the ball over the advancing keeper but it was booted away by the last defender. Kieran found Harry who tried one from distance but the keeper was ideally placed for the save. Jonathan was denied by the body of the diving keeper as the Lions were upping their game. Harry sent in a long cross to Kieran who swept it to Jonathan who composed himself and made no mistake. 0 4. Luke then popped up in an advance position on the right and drilled one across goal and Martin on the far post side footed it over the line. 0 5. Ryan and Cameron then came off for a deserved rest allowing Dion and Christian to come back on. Kieran battled in midfield and released Harry whose shot was only just wide. WW pushed for a consolation goal by breaking down the right but Luke produced a goal saving tackle in the box to keep a clean sheet for the Lions. WW kept up the pressure but the Lions burst out of defence in numbers. Jonathan and Christian played a big part in giving Kimathi sight of goal and he drove it low past the keeper. 0 6. The game finished without either goalie being tested further. FT 0 6. It was another convincing win and two points bagged for the Lions that pushed them up to second in the league. Next its Shelton Athletic.
7th February 2010
League Cup
After another enforced break of two weeks due to the weather the boys were able to play this 3rd round tie for the right to play AC Paulista in the next round. The Lions were without Nicholas (and will be for at least the next few weeks) and Owen. They started with Jonathan, Jake and Harry as subs. Shelton made early inroads into the Glebe half on a very heavy pitch and Elliot was the first goalie called into action when he held onto a cross from the left. Kieran then gave Christian the opportunity to run at the Shelton defence but he was halted by a determined defender. Back came Shelton down the left but Kimathi made sure they only gained a corner. Clear cut chances were few and far between as the defences dominated for most of the first half. Ten minutes gone and Brendan broke clear and had a shot go just wide of the left post. Five minutes later Elliot produced a fingertip save but the ball kept rolling towards goal before he pulled it back with an outstretched arm. Brendan again imposed himself, beat 3 defenders and pushed the ball to Martin whose shot was plucked from the air by the Shelton keeper. They in turn burst through the middle and sent in a low effort that forced a corner from Elliots save. Jack then benefited from a Christian ball out to the right that allowed him to centre across the goal area just beyond the advancing Kieran. Brendan battled and stole the ball in the mud bath middle and thumped one just right of the Shelton post and then Jack had one saved from going in under the bar. Nail biting stuff. The deadlock was broken on the stroke of half time when a slow Glebe build up went to Jack on the right. He whipped one in that the flailing leg of a defender could only deflect past his own keeper. HT 1 0. Brendan, Dion and Kieran gave way to Jonathan, Jake and Harry for the restart. Five minutes into the half and Shelton grabbed an equaliser when a weak shot squirmed between Elliots legs and crawled across the goal line. 1 1. Shelton continued to cope better with the testing conditions but Ryan, Cameron and Luke stood firm at the back. Brendan came back on for Christian just before Jake set up Jack for a run and shot at goal. Again the Shelton keepers positioning was spot on to prevent the Lions retaking the lead. Jack turned provider for Jonathan to head for goal but his marker forced him out to the left and his shot from an acute angle went wide. Thirteen minutes of the half saw the Lions get the nose in front again when Brendan and Harry played a part in Jonathan having space to poke the ball into the back of the net. 1 2. Two minutes later and Martin looked to have extended the lead with a lofted shot but was denied by the safe hands of the Shelton goalie. The game became gridlocked in the middle half of the pitch until Elliot was called upon to keep one out from the right. The clock was ticking down and with only 3 minutes of the tie to go the ball was lost in a sea of bodies in the Glebe penalty area. Then out of the blue it flashed into the goal for a second Shelton equaliser. 2 2. No one was able to find a winner before the end of normal time.
FT 2 2. Ten minutes of extra time each way began and Elliot half stopped a shot and needed Dion, who had replaced Cameron, to clear before it crossed the line. For the first time in the game Shelton took the lead when they raced through the middle and lifted the ball over Elliot. 2 3. The Lions continued to give their all in an attempt to draw level and Harry almost brought goal number three, but was thwarted by a keeper who was in fine form. Kimathi soon followed that up with one that just flew wide of the post. Dion went even closer with a strike that was half blocked by a defender but still heading for goal until the keeper grabbed it with both arms. Jonathan was denied a brace by another fine save. Into the second period of extra time and it was clear that the Lions were flagging having given their all as Sheltons fourth goal went in despite efforts to prevent it by tired legs. 2 4. Kieran found the energy to nip down the right and was about to let fly when a challenge robbed him of the chance. Shelton made the tie safe when they found space and time to turn in number five. 2 5. It was a scoreline that did not do justice for all the Lions effort and endeavours. Elliot then produced a double save to prevent a sixth that certainly would not have reflected how competitive a cup tie this game really was. AET 2 5. It was So close and yet so far for the Lions. No doubt the boys will bounce back from this in their next fixture.
Aldersbrook Athletic v Glebe Lions U11
24th January 2010
London Cup semi final
It was an early Sunday morning start for the Lions at Wanstead Flats for this London Cup semi-final encounter. Both teams were undefeated in their respective leagues and the London Cup so far this season. Only one team would have their record intact at the end of the match. The Lions were without Kimathi and started with Owen, Jake, Harry and Jonathan as subs. Aldersbrook (AA) kicked off but Jack, Nicholas, Christian and Kieran combined to put early pressure on the opponents defence which was typical of how most of the first half was to unfold. From a throw in on the left Kieran slid the ball to Nicholas who just failed to find the target. AA tried to counter attack by using the left wing but were finding Dion in no mood to let them through. The opening goal came after just five minutes when Kieran thread the ball to Nicholas. His shot was blocked but Brendan picked up on it and his left foot belter was pushed by the keeper onto the right hand post. Jack then hit the rebound but he was also denied by the keeper and then Christian following up made sure by putting it beyond everyone and into the far right of the goal. 0 1. It was almost two when Brendan put the ball out on the right and Nicholas zoomed in on goal but an AA defender made a saving tackle just before the shot came in. From the corner Nicholas was again thwarted by a last gasp blocking tackle that sent the ball ballooning over the bar. Meanwhile the sporadic moves by AA into the Glebe half were always being cut short by Dion, Ryan, Luke or Cameron who were all making defending look relatively easy. Massively against the run of play AA scored an equaliser from the penalty spot after Cameron was unluckily judged to have fouled an AA forward in the box. The spot kick was perfectly placed into the right hand corner of Elliots goal. 1 1. Undeterred the Lions struck straight back when a stray AA clearance only found Brendan in the centre and he sent it out to Kieran on the left. His first time pass allowed Christian to show superb ball control before calmly slotting it past the diving keeper. 1 2. Jack then had an effort from the right well held by the keeper as the Lions sought goal number 3 with quality passing football. If Cameron, Luke or Dion pushed into the AA half Brendan, Martin or Kieran were holding back and covering the defence. Jake then came on for Nicholas who had covered every blade of grass in the AA half. Cameron then ran at the AA defence and after beating two went crashing to the ground inside the box with the Lions supporters shouting for a penalty. Soon after AA narrowly missed heading into their own goal from a corner and then Jake hit the top of the crossbar with an overhead kick. He didnt have wait long to celebrate a goal. An AA clearance was intercepted by Martin who lifted the ball over the AA defence. The energetic Jake was the quickest off the mark and raced onto the ball before lifting it over the advancing keeper and into the net. 1 3. AA never gave up and tried to find space down the left but again Luke and Ryan ensured Elliot was never tested. There was almost an action reply of Jakes goal when Dion sent a high one to Jack who flicked on to Christian and he lifted it onto the back of the net to the cheers of the Lions supporters who thought it was in the goal! There was just time for Martin to test the goalie before the half time whistle. HT 1 3. On came Harry, Jonathan and Owen for the second period. AA no doubt were geed up and urged to step up a gear or two during the break as they made it much harder for the Lions to play their fast flowing football and created more goal scoring opportunities for their own forwards. The duo of Dion and Harry cleared chance number one and then Elliot was down low to make his first save of the match for chance number two. Jake dashed down the left and again found the keeper in fine form as he hit a low shot towards the near post. Shortly after Nicholas came back on AA almost pulled a goal back but the ball struck the left post before Ryan and then Brendan made sure it was dispatched out of harms way. Nicholas went close before Owen put in an important and supremely timed tackle at the other end of the pitch. Kieran and Jack came back on so Harry switched wings and it almost paid off when he hit a sweet shot that produced another quality save from the keeper. Into the nail biting last few minutes and Cameron replaced Dion. Nicholas drove a high ball that only missed the left post by a whisker before the Lions finally sealed the victory with a minute to go. Cameron and Jonathan assisted Jack out on the right who then sent over a perfect high ball that Nicholas met and nodded in for a well deserved goal. 1 4. Seconds later and the final whistle blew and the Lions were into the London Cup final for the second time in three years. FT 1 4. This was an excellent result with major contributions from all the boys. Well done! Its Glebe Lions v Boca Youth in the final on 14th March 2010. Next game its another toughie Shelton Athletic in the League Cup.
Glebe Lions v Wickham Wanderers Youth
17th January 2010
The snow had finally cleared but to ensure that this league game went ahead this Lions home fixture was played on a neutral ground. They welcomed back their manager Mickey who was able to select from a full squad. Christian, Harry, Ryan, Dion and Kimathi started as subs.
It took both teams a couple of minutes to get going on the heavy ground and to work out the pace of the ball. After 3 minutes Jack on the right rolled one into the box but Jake was just beaten by the keeper to the ball. There was little goalmouth incident until the sixth minute when Brendan snatched the ball from the WWY midfield, strode forward and launched it over the keeper into the back of the net. 1 0. The back line of Cameron, Owen, Luke and Martin kept the WWY forwards away from the Lions goal up until the eighth minute. A break allowed a shot on goal that Elliot deflected for a corner with his left knee. Chances remained few and far between until Jake released Nicholas but the keeper did well to block the shot for a corner. The Lions second was only a short wait away when Jonathan spotted Harry out on the right touchline. Harry dropped the ball onto a sixpence so that Brendan could head in from six feet. 2 0. Shortly after Christian, Kieran and Ryan came on for Martin, Harry and Nicholas. Jake and then Kieran had efforts saved by the goalie as the Lions seemed to have control of the scoreboard. However a wayward Lions pass in their own third was picked up by WWY and the ball was slotted home past Elliot. 2 1. The football was not reaching the same heights as the Belvedere game a fortnight ago and for ten minutes both keepers were almost made redundant. Brendan came to the games rescue and secured a deserved hatrick. A right foot shot was blocked for a corner but sixty seconds later he unleashed a thunderbolt that despite getting his fingertips to the keeper could not keep out. 3 1. Brendan capped a superb first half display when from a free kick way out on the left touchline he whipped the ball into the top right hand corner for goal number four seconds before the half time whistle. HT 4 1. For the restart Dion, Kimathi and Harry replaced Cameron, Jake and Jonathan. Dion rolled the ball to Jack out on the right but no boot could quite connect with his cross into the box. Again the game went into a lull before WWY caused some Lions jitters when they moved down the left and an unmarked forward was able to reduce the deficit to two. 4 2. Things almost got worse when a melee in the Lions box almost brought a third but Luke made the telling clearance. Calm was restored when Kimathis pass allowed Jack to lift the ball over the keeper and high into the WWY goal. 5 2. Harry had a fine effort saved before Luke blocked a certain WWY goal. Harry was involved again as he sent Jack on another run before he unleashed a wicked shot that the keeper did well to stop. The ball went straight to Christian backing up and he made no mistake from close range. 6 2. Martin on for Kieran produced another of his trademark runs down the wing and cut inside but just before he could find the target he was tackled for a corner. Nicholas had the last shot of the match but was denied by the goalie. FT 6 2. This win (the third such score-line in eight games) cements third place in the league and edges the boys closer to Shelton and Selsdon. Next week the Lions face Aldersbrook Athletic of the East London and Essex League for a place in the London Cup final.
Belvedere v Glebe Lions U11
3rd January 2010
Quarter Final London Cup
Fortunately for the first game of 2010 the sun was shining brightly and defrosted the pitch sufficiently for the referee to allow the match to go ahead. The Lions were without Ryan, Kimathi and their manager Mickey. His very capable assistant Mike was forced to shuffle the pack and started with Dion, Jake and Harry as subs.
The Lions had the advantage of playing down the slope for the first half but the general feeling was that they needed at least a two goal lead going into the second when they would be kicking up the gradient. From the first whistle Jack attacked down the right and crossed to give Jonathan a well directed snapshot at goal that only lacked a little power. Belvedere soon had their first chance but Elliot dropped on the ball before it could squeeze inside his right post. The Belvedere No12, who was to prove a handful throughout the game, showed his early turn of speed as the ball soon came back at the Lions but Cameron snuffed out the danger. A minute later it was Martins turn to show great pace and strength as he held off the challenge from a white shirt to allow Elliot to scoop up the ball. The deadlock was broken after 5 minutes as Martin found Kieran on the right. He hit the ball across the keeper who could only parry it into the path of Christian who side footed it with his left into the net. 0 1. Not surprisingly Belvedere came back at the Lions and their No12 almost made it level within a minute but narrowly found the wrong side of the post. The Lions then had a stroke of luck to extend their lead. Nicholas in the centre circle spun a ball out to Jack on the right. He beat his defender and sent in a vicious high cross that the Belvedere defender could only head into the back of his own goal. 0 2. Owen and Martin then combined to ensure that Belvedere did not prosper from a clever chip deep into the Lions half. It was quickly followed by Owen, Cameron, Brendan and then Luke taking it in turns to repel the white waves as Belvedere continued to press for their opener. Both teams then looked to get a stranglehold but neither set of players wanted to give their opponents time or space on the ball especially in the middle where Brendan, Jack, Martin and Jonathan were battling and running their hearts out. Up front Kieran, Nicholas, Christian and then Jake were giving the Belvedere defence a torrid time. Dion came on for Cameron who took a knock and slipped in so that the balance and quality of the team remained sky high. Perhaps the pivotal moment of the game came as Elliot hit a goal kick long and high. The ball was instantly returned from the centre spot and bounced like a tennis ball back over his head and was destined to cross the line between the posts. However a Belvedere forward following up and only a yard from the line swung a leg at the ball and only succeeded in scooping it six feet over the crossbar. Nicholas, from a Jack cross, and then Brendan almost gave the Lions a third just before half time but it would have been a little unjust for the home team to go into the break three down. HT 0 2. The team talk from Mike was that Belvedere would go hard at them in the second half and wanted the boys to maintain the same level of pressure that had exerted in the first. Harry came on with fresh legs while Cameron, Christian and Kieran waited eagerly on the side. Elliot was soon called on to gather a through ball on the edge of the box. However Brendan hit the first shot of the half on target that the keeper deflected out but Nicholas couldnt quite steer the rebound between the posts. The Lions hemmed the boys in white back in their own half and Harry almost capitalised on it with one that eluded the keeper but skimmed the outside of the post. A minute later he was only denied by the flailing legs of the keeper and the desperate clearance by the Belvedere defence. Meanwhile Martin, Owen, Luke and Dion were not allowing Belvedere to get a sniff of a goal that might have given them a much needed lift. Brendan, Jonathan and Jack stuck to their task of not letting the opponents have time on the ball and up front Nicholas, Harry and Jake ensured the defence and the keeper never had a breather. Christian came on for Jake but was soon forced off to be replaced by Cameron who dropped into defence with Dion pushed up into midfield by Mike. The next goal was always going to be crucial and Belvedere thought it was theirs but first the left post came to the Lions rescue and then the referees whistle blew for offside as they finally found the back of the net. Jonathan missed by inches and again Harry went close. It was ping-pong football as the game flowed from end to end. Then to the Lions relief Harry fed Nicholas whose shot was pushed out only to Dion who made no mistake as he side footed the ball across the line. 0 3. Instead of feeling sorry for themselves Belvedere came straight back and reduced the deficit to two goals within a minute. The first shot Elliot stretched himself and got his gloves to but the ball dropped and was knocked into the net. 1- 3. It was no more than they deserved. With time running out Jonathan played a neat pass to Nicholas who was tackled for a corner. Harry took the kick and Brendan made the game safe with goal number four for the Lions. FT 1 4. The score-line did not truly reflect how hard a win this was for the Lions. Both sets of players gave their all throughout in a thoroughly enjoyable game. Hard luck Belvedere and well done the Lions.
Wickham Wanderers v Glebe Lions U11
13th December 2009
Hooray! At last, after 3 weeks, the weather had relented and the boys were able to play a real game of football. Unfortunately Martin had succumbed overnight to illness and was not available. Christian, Cameron, Jake and Jonathan started as subs.
From the outset the Lions set about taking the game by the scruff of the neck. However control of the ball and passing the football were proving tricky in the heavy conditions underfoot. Following a good solo run that took him past three defenders Kieran hit the first shot in anger from distance with four minutes gone on the watch but the keeper was well positioned and comfortably held the ball. A minute later Kieran provided Brendan with a chance that climbed over the bar. The deadlock was broken when Harry cut the ball back inside to Kimathi whose strike took a slight deflection but such was the timing and power it still flew into the net. 0 1. The boys in red pressed for a second but Wickham tackled stubbornly and kept trouble at bay until Brendan stepped up and launched one from outside the box that stayed just the wrong side of the post. The inevitable came on 14 minutes when Harry collected the ball on the right edge of the box and skilfully hit it across the keeper to put the Lions two up. 0 2. Jake then came on for the goal scorer and made an almost instant impact. His pass to Kieran then moved onto Nicholas who cleverly chipped the goalie. 0 3. Jonathan, who had come on for the limping Brendan, linked up with Jake to produce a shot that the keeper held at the second attempt. He then kicked from hand but it only found Nicholas who nipped down the right and then crossed to Jake who made no mistake with his finish. 0 4. Despite the grey and cold conditions all looked bright for the Lions at this stage. Elliot was hardly called upon to touch the ball. Owen, Ryan, Luke and Dion had it all sewn up at the back with the willing and able Kimathi, Jack, Brendan (before his knock) and Jonathan working like Trojans. Up front Kieran, Nicholas, Harry (before being substituted) and Jake were always a threat. Jack and Nicholas combined to give Kieran the opportunity to hit an excellent strike that had goal number five written all over it. However the keeper pulled off a super save to his left. With only seconds to go before a well earned half time refreshment the Lions were caught napping when Wickham broke down the left wing and then cut inside leaving a one on one with Elliot. The ball was guided beyond his left hand and squeezed inside the post. HT 1 4. Cameron and Christian came on for Ryan. Jack and Jake attacked down the right but were halted by a rejuvenated Wickham side. In fact Wanderers showed that they were buoyed by their success late in the first half and were causing the Lions all sorts of problems as Dion was called upon to clear off the goal line. Minutes later Elliot failed to hold onto a shot but Luke came to the rescue and cleared. Ryan came back on for Jack but even he was unable to anything as things got even better for Wickham as they netted goal number two after making ground down the left. 2 4. Nicholas and Brendan replaced Kimathi and Jake with the course of the game in doubt. The Lions nerves were jangling but a fine move started and finished by Dion involving Brendan and Christian saw the ball sailing over the keeper but importantly into the back of the net. 2 5. The Lions maintained the momentum as Brendan with vision picked out Harry who used his pace to open up the defence and let loose a rocket that the keeper did well to smother. A minute later the impressive Nicholas ate up the ground on the left and without breaking his stride crossed to Christian who coolly netted from six yards. 2 6. The Lions dominance continued when Brendan was again on hand to deliver the ball to the luckless Kieran whose shot came off the post. Fortunately the ball found its way to Harry on the edge of the box and he lifted the ball into the roof of the goal. 2 7. Christian almost made it eight for the Lions but shaved the right hand post with his attempt. FT 2 7 and a tally of seven goals from six different players. Next its Belvedere in the London Cup - weather permitting of course!
