Match reports
Gladly Josephine, Benedetta, Jane, Samantha, Leah, Thomasina, Edwina, Erica and Cally were not available for today’s match against Balgowan, so their male alter egos had to make an appearance!
This week the Tigers played for 50 minutes instead of 25. Despite kicking uphill in the first half we were shooting at every opportunity, and defending as a team, with Joe, Eric and Ed making excellent tackles and marking the opposition to allow them no space or time on the ball. Tom made an outstanding save from a long range effort and we were unlucky to be 2-0 down in the first 20 minutes. The first time James had started up front was a good decision from the manager as he had at least 3 shots on goal (1 came off the post) and he chased every ball. Sam and Liam also had great efforts on goal and one that dipped over the bar by Callum.
With 2 minutes to go till half time Liam hit a fabulous shot into the bottom right hand corner that left their keeper with no chance and parents wondering whether it had gone in or hit the side net (because of the subdued celebration!) 2 – 1 at HT.
We came out in the second half knowing we could score more goals and take advantage of the downhill slope but it was Balgowan who struck first. Unlike previous weeks we refused to let our heads go down and we knew if we carried on playing the football we are capable of we would create more chances.
Joe played Tom in with an inch perfect pass that Tom controlled well, played a one two with Liam and slotted the ball in the net. Tom carried on battling throughout and his “never say die” attitude paid huge dividends as he chased what many would have thought was a lost cause, won the ball in their box and smashed home the equalizer. Joe and Eric knew they had to stand firm in defence for the rest of the match and not allow Balgowan any more opportunities. They worked well together and with Ed backing them up (and with a perfect finger-tip save of his own) they let no more goals in. A hat-trick chance came Tom’s way when he took the ball well on the left wing and with a first time shot attempted to lob the keeper 40 yards out, unfortunately it clipped the bar and went out for a goal kick.
From the resulting kick Liam closed down the Balgowan defence quickly as he had done all morning, won the ball and another magnificent strike gave Liam his 5th goal in 2 games but more importantly it gave the Tigers the lead. With 5 minutes left of the match we knew we needed to hold on for a much needed win and instead of defending too deeply and trying to hold on to what we had, our manager insisted we carried on attacking. Tom had another great effort which was tipped round the post by the keeper, Liam stepped up to take the corner which Sam bravely got his head to. It was heading goalwards and was well defended by Balgowan only for the ever present James to pop up at the near post to score his second goal of the season.
Final score: 5-3 to the Tigers.

Glebe Tigers V Genesis
Squad – Berryman, Sissan, Buttery, Spencer-Boyce (Captain), Hutchins, George, Shakespear & Grimshaw.
The Tigers were allotted an early kickoff at home for this fixture and although the Tigers were soundly beaten in the away fixture, the second half performance some months ago gave the crowd cause for optimism at kick off.
Genesis FC are top of the league for good reason, they have a couple of outstanding players in their team who were fast, strong and skilful. Yet again, the Tigers did show some glimpses of quality football. Sam, Liam, Ben, James, Eric competed with a big heart and showed real desire although we finished the first half 6-0 down. Joe, who had been off school for much of the week due to illness but did put an appearance in, in goal, and had little or no chance with a good few shots. Ben was also below par and was up against one of their special players, but did compete and battle well, and “skilled his man up” down the left hand side with a Cryuff turn.
But frankly speaking highlights in the first half were hard to find.
The Tigers followed the usual pattern and raised their game in the second half, it’s all too familiar The tigers will not win games if they only play for part of the game.
A tactical change with Tom moving into midfield and going man to man with their best player certainly made a difference, in fact Tom kept him out of the game in the second half.
Only 2 goals were scored in the second half and this was indeed, testament to a more committed performance by the Tigers.
Sam was brought down in their penalty area and duly stepped up to drive the ball home with a well struck penalty right into the corner.
The Tigers certainly had chances to score in open play, but were lacking the goal scoring instinct.
Injuries and illness played a part this week, however, without the commitment that Ben and Joe showed in just turning up after being doubtful following a fitness tests we would not have had a game at all!
Callum came off with a hand injury and could be out of play station action for up to a day.
Liam picked up the MOM award.
Match Report
Glebe Tigers – v- The Warren
13th December 2009
Glebe took the initial kick off but unfortunately an unlucky tackle in the box brought one of their players down resulting in a penalty and despite Ed's best efforts it was 1 - 0 to The Warren.
The pressure was on.
Ben did a good run up the field and did a great cross into the box but unfortunately Sam and Callum didn’t manage to get a touch to it. The Warren took the ball back up the pitch and dodged glebe defence and the ball was yet again in the back of our net.
Sub: Jo off – Tom on. Sam had an excellent run up the pitch beating five of their players to get a shot at goal but unfortunately he was tackled at the last minute and the ball was once more passed forward and ultimately into the back of our net. Despite best efforts, The Warrens superior passing saw them score once again. Half time. 4.0.
Second half saw Joe in goal and Ed rampaging around in midfield and a goal line save from Tom. Liam charged up the field and took a great shot at goal which hit the back of the net and gave as our first and only goal. Disaster then struck, as despite hard tackles and plenty of running they managed to defeat the capable hands of Joe to score another 2 goals.
We played better in this half and were unlucky that several good attempts on goal by Ben, Sam, Callum and Eric were foiled by their goalie.
Many thanks to mums and dads for their unwavering support and to Dave the manager for his patience!
Final score 6 -1
Man of the match: Sam, well deserved.
Glebe Tigers v Genesis
It was a sunny Sunday afternoon when we arrived to play Genesis to find that we had been locked out, the gate was finally opened and the goals were put up.
Genesis were quick on the ball making quick passes to each other. When we had the ball three Genesis played quickly surrounded us. They scored early on in the match and were soon 1-0 up but we kept trying. Soon Genesis scored again and it became harder to stop them. We had some chances but not many. At half time we were 4-0 nil down
In the second half Edward swopped with Joe to go in goal. We played better and had more chances, Joe, Ben and Callum all nearly scored. Sam worked really hard and kept winning the ball in midfield but Genesis defended well. Genesis scored 2 more goals but Eric and Liam worked very hard in defence to deny them any more goals.
I think we were unlucky not score.
Man of the match was Eric.
Callum
Managers comments - we were taught a lesson today....in the first half - Genesis ran faster, tackled harder, and passed the ball quicker and the Tigers were asleep.
Although Genesis are a good team with a couple of good players, the second half was very different, Glebe were awake and competed for the ball, work rate was up and we started to play football.
But it was too little too late. Genesis deserved their win, but had we played the first half as we did the second - we may have won.
That;s enough about today.
Get some rest, and be ready to compete next week.
Match Report 4th Oct 09
Glebe Tigers v Doverhouse Lions
After last weeks performance against Chipstead we were ready to face Doverhouse Lions, hoping to get our first win of the season. We had an advantage because our opponents only had six players but in spite of that, they made a good start with the ball in our half for the first few minutes. However, our first attack of the match was good work down the right from Sam leading to a storming goal from Tom. 1-0!
Tom made a great run down the left wing and we put together a good string of passes from Joe to Tom and finally Sam who beat their keeper with a powerful shot which burst through the back of the net and into the bushes. 2-0 (and Sams first goal for the Tigers!)
A few minutes later Doverhouse got one back from a lovely pass from the middle to the left and another pass which slipped through Chances legs and Ed was unlucky not to get to it. 2-1!
Liam took an injury to his ankle after a hard challenge and had to go limping off for a rest. Joe came off too, and they were replaced by Callum and Ben. Callum got stuck in straight away and scored a cracking goal with a long shot which the keeper tipped up behind him into the goal. We went in to half time with the score at 3-1!
Both teams played better in the second half, with good effort and commitment from Eric and James, who tackled and defended well. Ed was well into his stride in goal, easily collecting shots from Doverhouse. Unfortunately a penalty was awarded against him for a mistimed challenge. This was Doverhouses chance to pull the score back to 3-2. Ed made himself look big by spreading his arms and legs wide and it must have worked because they hit the post with the penalty and Joe cleared it well.
Sadly another couple of injuries for Liam and Tom resulted in Tom being stretchered off the pitch for a rest. A great ball from Joe to Ben and a pass in front of the keeper which Sam slid in on and got the ball into the back of the net. Great goal. 4-1!
The final whistle blew and we all came off the pitch celebrating our first victory of the new season. Man of the Match went to James for his excellent tackling. Well done James (glue the trophy together for us!)
We are on our way to the top of the table.
Joe Berryman
Managers comments -
Well done Glebe Tigers! , a good win, some good goals, some excellent tackles and good passes - well done all of you.
Match Report 27th Sept 09
Glebe Tigers v Chipstead
The match started and Joe and Tom were on the bench. Ed was in goal, with James and Liam in defence, Eric, Sam, Callum and Ben up front. Chipstead had early shots on goal with Ed pulling off good saves. Sam, Ben, Callum and Eric worked hard and also had some good stikes. The match was very close and exciting. The Chipstead goal keeper was very good and played well.
Liam and James blocked and tackled, but eventually Chipstead scored the first goal of the match. Not giving up and with only seconds to go, Eric shoots and hits the post. The keeper, trying to save it, injured himself. The whistle blew and it was half time.
The second half was even livelier, subs Joe and Tom replaced James and Callum. In the second half most of the possession was ours. Tom, Ben and Sam had good runs and shots. Tom ran down the right of the pitch and was fouled. Liam took the free kick not far from the box, Liam struck the ball hitting the back of the net, 1-1. Great Goal.
The match went on and was nerve racking for the players and the parents. Anything could have happened with shots from both teams being saved, hitting the bar or just going wide.
There were lots of corners to defend, but a last Tom managed a classy dribble, out foxing his opponents, lined up his shot and the goal was his. Now at 2-1 with about 2 minutes left, Chipstead were fighting back. Ed pulled off more great saves and just as we thought we won a last gasp attempt and they equalised.
The final score was 2-2. Everyone was upset and frustrated about the match. David called in the lads for a team talk and who was the man of the match?
The man of the match was Edward after pulling off some humongous saves.
We prepare for next week.

Managers comments
We didn't deserve to go down 7.1, in fact we made loads of chances to score. We kept playing right to the final whistle and played some really nice football at times.
Lets not dwell on the result too much, after all their man of the match was their goal kepper, so we must have given him a good work out.
Our man of the match was Joe Berryman - Well done Joe.
