MATCH REPORTSOxted & District v Glebe Tigers04/12/2011Score 2-3Its an overcast morning. Dry, but the pitch is a little muddy underfoot. Glebe start kicking up hill with further slope down right to left- the pitch is very picturesque but, as James dad points out- its shaped like a Pringle!As the match gets underway Liam is quickly called into action to clear the ball away. Shortly after Dylan smothers a shot and it looks like the momentum is with the home team.Glebe start to make some inroads into the Oxted half. Nick makes a break down the wing and cuts inside onto his right foot. The shot lacks power and is saved easily. Eric makes a dash down the wing but is closed down.0-1!-Glebes revival is shot lived as it is Oxted who open the scoring. Midfield are too slow to close down and a shot is buried in the back of the net from just outside the area.Kieran makes an explosive run down the right. Using his pace to get past the last man he squares the ball across the area but Callum cant get anything on it to turn it in. There are murmurings in the Oxted contingent about Kierans size advantage and hes singled out as a danger man!Suddenly theres a penalty award in Glebes favour. Kieran again is on a run and falls over under a challenge just inside the area. Its a dubious decision and the Oxted coach is spitting mad at his own referee! Jack M steps up, keeps his composure to level the score. 1-1!Glebe are still finding it a bit of an up-hill struggle- literally! The breaks are not coming their way as they are pinned back in their half. Oxted soon score again as the ball breaks across the goal and finds its way into the bottom left hand corner. 2-1!Kieran again makes a dash down the right and forces the keeper into a finger-tip saveNick also forces his way through but, rather than take it round the keeper he elects to shoot and the ball flashes past the left hand post out of play.The Oxted coach is standing back from the pitch barking orders over our heads. It is quite clear hes not happy with the referees decisions and is feeling an injustice.Half time and theres a lot to do but at least were kicking down hill from now on!Shortly into the second half Eric has a free kick just inside the Oxted half. The ball goes over the top, hits the space and bounces up over the defenders knee. Kieran picks it up, takes it away from the hapless keeper and taps it home. Its 2-2!!Oxted press forward and have a penalty shout of their own which is waved away by the Ref much to the frustration of the Oxted coaches.Suddenly Nick is through and one-on-one with the keeper! Again he shoots and the keeper makes a good save with his foot deflecting it past his post. Nick spins away his head in his hands!The pressure starts to build on the Oxted goal as Glebe sense they can snatch a victory.There are a succession of chances which go begging or theres as offside flag.Little niggles are creeping in- the odd push here- a kick out there. Its a physical contest.Oxted at time threaten to grab the points for themselves. Dan, Jack A and Eric under pressure have to keep alert and are frequently called upon to intervene to break up attacks and make clearances. The game is evenly poised - Glebe appear to have a strong penalty shout. This time the Referee turns it down. It appears to be a much stronger call than the one he awarded in the first half. At least it evens things out!Finally, Nick finds his composure back and latches on to a through ball. This time, under Samis direction, he takes it round the keeper and slots it into the Oxted net- 3-2!The Glebe mums are jumping up and down with joy. This was a hard fought win in difficult conditions against a spirited side. FAB-U-LOUS!
