MATCH REPORTSJunior Elite 7 Glebe Lions 1 (HT 3-0) 6th Nov 2011 Another score line for the Lions that doesnt tell the whole story, and despite a few lapses this was a good all round effort in a mixed ability team playing some of the strongest teams in the Tandridge league boasting many academy players. Our starting line up was Ben in goal, Harry left back, Mus right back, Shey just in front of defence , Jay left wing, Callahan right wing and Morgan striker. We were also helped out today by Joe and Alex, who started on the bench. Within a minute of the KO, Ben was called on to make a save, but continued pressure from the opposition breached our defence with 3 mins on the clock and we were down 0-1. Just a minute later t was 0-2, as a ball was drilled in from the right. On 10 mins Joe came on for Shey, and Alex for Callahan. Their influence was almost immediate with Joe showing some penetration up front and hitting the right hand post. All the boys battled bravely over the next few minutes, Mus, Shey and Harry working particularly hard in defence With 18 mins on the clock, Ben had to come out to take a ball. He got his angles pretty much right and the ball hit the post. Harry was there to clear. Just as we approached half time, another attack resulted in a goal from wide on the right hand side 0-3. For the second half Jay came off and Joe moved to left wing. Mus went into goal, Shey to left back, Harry right back, Ben in front of defence and linking to the forwards. Callahan came back on as right wing. Another effort by Joe followed but to no avail. Minutes later Morgan hit into the right hand netting. However on 24 mins the hard work was undone when we ball watched a good shot that made it 0-4. On 26 mins, we failed to clear a ball and it was 0-5.There followed some minutes of Glebe posession and the first sustained period of pressure on the opposition. Some great work saw Ben, Joe and Callahan involved in a move that brought a save from Callahans shot. On 30 mins Harry was a called on to make a great cover tackle and Mus had to make a save. On 32 mins the pressure told, as the ball was slipped to Joe, who made no mistake 1-5. On 35 mins, we won a corner and a great delivery from Ben only needed someone to get a touch on the ball but it was not forthcoming. Minutes later A Glebe break saw Morgan have a half chance, followed by a shot from Jay, but it was blocked by the opposition defence. There followed a Callahan shot from the right hand side that went wide of goal. On 37 mins, or defence got caught holding too high a line, and a swift through ball left Mus with no chance, 1-6. The 7th goal was desperately unlucky. Shey who had taken a knock a couple of weeks ago, had hurt is leg in challenge, and he was limping off to the touchline before the referee had blown the whistle despite Glebe shouts that we had an injured player. The boys worked hard as usual and there were moments when we played some good attacking football and created some pressure and some chances, but we need to keep this up consistently during a match. MOTM Morgan, for some great work in front of goal and getting back on numerous occasions to help out the defence. Glebe Lions 0 Coney Hall 6 (HT 0-0) 23rd Oct 2011They say that football is a game of two halves, and this was very much the case on another beautiful Autumn day at Southborough. Once again we were shot of a full team with an injury to Shey. Fortunately we were able to field seven players with the help of Lucas from the Tigers. Starting line up was Be in goal, Mus left back, Harry right back, and Jay playing just in front of them. Callahan left wing, Morgan right wing and Lucas striker. The Lions started strongly and in the first minute we won a corner but could not make anything of it as Lucas hit it in from the right of goal. The next 7 mins saw the ball being battled for in midfield with good work from Mus, Harry and Jay, supported by the forwards and wings but we could not make any chances. On 7mins a Coney Hall corner deflected off one of their players, just wide of goal. A minute later Ben was called on to make a double save as the defence failed to pick up a run on goal. Within seconds we were at the other end having won a corner. Once again we were unable to make it count. On 9 mins, the defence was breached once again and Ben had to make another save. On 10 mins some Glebe pressure on the left resulted in another corner worked by Lucas and Jay to no avail. It was end to end stuff as within seconds the defence were caught again and a shot went a whisker wide of the Lions post. There followed some consistent Coney Hall pressure and Harry, Mus and Callahan worked extremely hard to prevent any shots going in on goal. On 18mins another Lions corner was whipped in but there was no one in the box to cause any problems. We managed to exert some pressure ourselves and finished the half strongly with Jay, Morgan and Lucas working the ball but no one getting in a shooting position. HT 0-0.For the second half Harry went into goal and Ben moved out to Right Back. Two minutes into the half Coney Hall scored, a clearance being hit straight back at the Lions goal 0-1. A minute later we won a free kick half way in the Coney Hall half, wide on the left Ben stepped up to take an excellent free kick that the keeper did well to keep out. As we raced back to defend, a bouncing ball caught a Glebe foot and bounced over the head of our goalie 0-2, and desperately unlucky. Another Coney Hall attack followed and Harry had to make a fantastic save at point blank range, but 2 mins later once again we failed to clear the ball and it was hit back to make it 0-3. 11 mins into the half and we stood off one of the opposition players as he hit a lovely shot into goal from wide of the right hand side of the box 0-4. It was the first time the boys had failed to contest the ball. We continued to fight bravely for the next few minutes, but we lost our way with about 4 mins to go as Harry was left facing 4 opposition players in the box and had no chance when the shot came in. 0-5. The Lions were not going down without a fight and we were back in the opposition half to win a corner but it was kicked straight out. On 38 mins a poor clearance saw the ball hit straight back at the Lions goal 0-6. The last couple of minutes were all Glebe, and particularly Morgan who put in some excellent solo work having switched to the left wing, but he could just not make anything of it. A first half to remember and the boys showed the commitment and fighting spirit that we know they are capable of, but it is extremely difficult to keep that up with no fresh legs to help out. We need to try and keep that up for the entire 40mins and can hopefully do that once we get a couple of players into the squad. Chatting to a coach who has trained teams at a high level commented to me afterwards that the score was not a reflection of the game and that the Lions were very unlucky, and I agree entirely. MOTM went to Mus for tireless effort throughout the game and never being afraid to get in front of the ball no matter how hard it was hit.Glebe Lions 0 Tunbridge Wells Foresters 4 (2nd October 2011) Another hot summer like day at Southborough, and with the lions down to 7 in the squad we were lucky to b able to rope in the services of Kai from the Pumas to give us a bit of help in the first half and still have a good rest before his later kick off. The Foresters Manager was very understanding with this arrangement. The Starting line up was Ben in goal, Mus left back Harry right back, Kai playing centrally just n front of them, Callahan left wing, Jay right wing and Morgan up front. Shey started off as sub so that he woukd be raring to go for 30 mns when he came onto the pitch. We half the Foresters at bay for 13mins despite some skillful attacking play from them. The defence of Mus, Harry, Kai and Shey when he came on, worked manfully to keep the ball out. Ben in goal had to make a couple of excellent saves that even brought applause of the opposition manager. However, the deadlock was broken as a deflected ball finally found its way into the net 0-1. A minute later Ben had to dive full length to save at his left hand post. On 16 mins, again, a big deflection resulted in another goal for the opposition 0-2. This was followed shortly after by an excellent Lions move that showed what the boys are capable of. Callahan, Morgan and Jay were involved, and the ball came back to Callahan for a shot which went wide. The half time score at 0-2 was not a reflection on how the boys had played, and was a bit flattering to the opposition although their quality of play could not be faulted. For the second half, Harry went in goal, Mus left back, Shey right back, Ben playing centrally just in front of defence, Callahan left wing, Jay right wing and Morgan up front. We started brightly in the second half and within a minute of the restart some great team play that saw the ball played out from defence and worked to the front saw Jay shoot from wide of the right of goal, only for his shot to be saved at the post. Bens corner was well delivered and was knocked out for another corner. The shot that resulted this time was saved. We continued to be put under pressure, but the boys battled on manfully, and this time Harry having to make a great stop in goal. In the 33rd min we switched off, no-one picking up an opposition player as he ran into the box from a corner and he had a simple tap in 0-3 we have been caught time and time again with not picking up these runs so need to work at this. Almost from the restart, the oppisiton picked up the ball and one of their boys started making a run deep into our half. It didnt look dangerous, but we were tiring and just didnt get the tackles in. Suddenly he was in the box and near the left hand post from where he was able to force it home to make it 0-4. There was still time for Harry to make another save as the Foresters finished strongly. As the whistle blew, some very tired boys walked off the pitch, but what an effort. Heads didnt drop, they stayed positive throughout, created one or two chances and all gave 100%. MOTM: Ben for some excellent saves in goal, and tireless running and tackling in the second half.Carshalton Athletic White 5 Glebe Lions 0 (25th September 2011) A warm Septembers day saw the lions outplayed by a talented Carshalton side (Previously know as Croydon Athletic). Once again, we didnt have any substitutes, and the warm weather took its toll, with very little movement in getting the ball forward, supporting one another and getting back to defend. However, the boys played manfully against a side with many recognisable academy boys. The team was Harry in goal, Mus left back, Ben right back, Shey playing just in front of defence, Callahan on the left wing, Jay on the right wing and Morgan as striker. The first 12 mins saw a lot of Carshalton possession in our half but they were kept at bay. Finally on the breakthrough came when a strong shot on the left hand side of our box found its way into goal 0-1. The defence had to work hard over the next few minutes with Mus, Shey and Ben trying to keep the opposition out and Callahan dropping back to help out. Finally a shot got through them for Harry to make a great save. Finally we started to see a bit of possession, and 0n 18 mins twice in quick succession Jay got in a shot but the ball screwed off his right foot and wide of the goal. Just as we were approaching half time, the defence was broken and a good shot made in 0-2. There was still time for more action before the half time whistle and Harry had to make another good stop. It was going to be hard in the second half, and within a minute of the restart we didnt close down the opposition quickly enough and a good shot from the left hand side made it 0-3.. On 25 mins we won a corner and Ben out in a lovely ball that the keeper just got fingers to. It came out to Jay but he shot wide of the right hand post. 2 mins later Harry had to make another good save. The action was soon at the other end as the clearance and follow up by Morgan forced a corner. Once again Ben put in a good ball. It wasnt cleared and Ben following up managed to get a shot in but the ball went wide. Battling work by Mus, Shey, Callahan and Ben kept Carshalton quiet until the 35min, but now there were some very tired legs out there and it was no surprise , when we failed to close the opposition down quickly enough and a powerful shot from the right hand side made it 0-4. It wasnt over yet as 3 mins later a great shot across goal made it 0-5. The Lions managed to get in once last roar though as Ben put a ball through to Morgan, who was forced wide but managed to hit a powerful shot into the side netting. A brave effort from some very tired boys, but we do need to remember some of the basics of football. If you have the ball the opposition cant score. If they have the ball in your half then you cant allow them space to move it around, and you have to track players when they move into danger areas. MOTM: Harry for excellent work in goal.Glebe Lions 4 Junior Elite 5 (18th September 2011) With only seven players available going into this first match of the season we always knew it was going to be tough and it certainly turned out to be, as we played a very skillful Junior Elite side. Allegedly this was only their first proper match, and if this is the case then they have a very exciting future ahead of them and gave us something to aspire to. The starting line up was Ben in goal, Harry left back, Mus right back and captain, Jay central in front of defence, Callahan left wing, Morgan right wing and Josh centre forward. Within 2 mins of the start a Glebe attack saw Jay get in a shot after some good work from Josh to get the ball to him, as the ball came out Josh found Jay again but the shot was parried by the goalkeeper for a second time. On 4 mins, we put the ball out for a corner, and it was whipped in, evading all in the box, and sneaked into the far top corner. 0-1. On 6 mins Callahan picked up the ball on the left hand side of the opposition half and some great determination and skill saw him work is way infield to score. 1-1. On 8 mins some great play from the opposition and shot needed Ben to get down smartly to save to his left.. Just a minute later we were caught flat footed, leaving the opposition one to one on our goalkeeper and the ball was slotted home 1-2. On 11 mins a poor clearance saw Morgan latch onto the ball and fire home to make it 2-2, but once again we failed to stop the opposition getting shots in, and a powerful shot across goal a minute later saw the ball creep in at the far post 2-3. During the next few minutes the boys worked really hard, with Harry and Mus doing some exceptional work closing players down and getting blocks in. Jay continued to support the defence and attack and worked hard despite carrying a knock from earlier in the week that was clearly hindering his mobility. On 19 mins, Ben was called upon again, making a save at the right hand post. Half time 2-3 At Half time Harry moved into goal. Callahan move to left back, Mus right back, Ben just in front of defence Josh on the left wing, Morgan staying right and Josh up front. We came out strongly in the 2nd half, and on 22 mins, a Ben corner was not cleared and Josh was able to stab home 3-3. The passage of play that led to our next goal on 27 mins was the best football we played all match. Ben played the ball to Jay, Jay moved it on to Josh who put it through to Morgan to slot home, 4-3 to Glebe. On 30 mins another great corner was only half cleared and Josh let fly, but the shot went wide. On 35 mins, a throw in saw the boys all pulled across to one side of the pitch leaving 2 opposition players unmarked on the far side of the box. A ball over the top gave Harry no chance. 4-4. Three minutes later and it was déjà vu, as we did the same thing and once again the goalkeeper had no chance. 4-5. We finished strongly in and around the opposition box, but could just not get in a telling shot. A great effort by the boys with some moments of flowing football where we moved the ball around, but we still have work to do, particularly in defence where we just arent picking up players as they run through, and also getting pulled towards the ball leaving unmarked players at the far post. MOTM Callahan, for his goal and excellent team spirit. The U8 Lions began training again last weekend after a Summer break, and managed to get in some much needed pre-season preparation in a friendly round robin on Sunday 11th September at the invitation of Selsdon Juniors. The matches were 15 minutes long. We were definitely a bit ring rusty to start, but throughout the three matches played, some of the fluency of last season at last began to show through, the boys showing some good movement and passing which bodes well for the season ahead. Results below:Glebe Lions 0 Selsdon Juniors Lions 0Double HeaderGlebe Lions 3 Genesis 0 (HT 2-0) Scorers (Josh 2, Jay)Glebe Lions 4 Genesis 1 (HT 2-0) Scorers (Jay 2, Josh, Ben)
