MATCH REPORTSU8 PUMAS v WARLINGHAM COLTS15th January 2012 Home With word of their exploits travelling fast, spectators flocking to the ground and Sir Alex Ferguson rumoured to be arriving by helicopter shortly before kick-off, the Pumas were keen to prove it wasnt all hype by turning on the style on Sunday. The extra police brought in to marshal the crowd had their hands full dealing with an unruly element spilling onto the touchline, but the professionalism of the players was not to be compromised. Midfield general Josh led the way, tackling relentlessly in a man-of-the-match performance while beaming from start to finish. Up front Max, Atrin and Kai pinged it about with aplomb, carving out space for Atrin to silkily stroke in the opener, while Kai, quickest to react to the loose ball in the box, slotted home the second before half time in true poacher style. Although a feisty opponent momentarily raised one of Georges eyebrows, he and Delvin were untroubled at the back, so regular keeper Rotimi was brought out of goal into defence for the second half, Max putting on the gloves in his place. Usual defender Charlie was sent up the left flank and Thomas added to midfield. The Pumas remained in control and a series of lightning fast breaks with some tremendous one touch passing eventually resulted in a second goal for Atrin and a third overall. So a 3-0 win the Pumas are back. Nobody did get to see Sir Alex in the end, but it didnt really matter no Puma would be interested in signing for him anyway.U8 PUMAS v WESTERHAM WOLVES8 January 2012 Away Promoted to a stronger league for the second half of the season, the boys faced a very tidy Westerham Wolves team this week. With George The Wall Dundas unavailable, the Pumas needed to adapt their game a little to hold and pass the ball in the opposition half a bit more while using the pace of Charlie and Delvin at the back to snuff out any fast breaks. It was a tight match. The midfield battle was very even, ball-winners Thomas and Josh doing their job well, but Westerham did too and no player from either side was allowed much time on the ball. Atrin and Max were denied the space they love to exploit, and the extremely bumpy surface made controlling and passing very difficult. The first half was scoreless with few chances for either side, the cat-like man-of-the-match Charlie nipping any wolfish danger in the bud. Long range efforts became the order of the day in the second half. Rotimi pulled off an outstanding fingertip save from a free kick taken MILES outside the box, and will no doubt claim he had the one that hit the bar from similar range shortly afterward covered. Max, who considers any shot more fierce than his a personal insult, soon crashed a piledriver on to the bar himself. As both sides pressed for a winner the game opened up and a fortunate bounce and defence splitting pass produced two goals for Westerham. At the other end Kai was giving their defence a thumping headache, but the boys just could not squeeze one past the keeper despite numerous efforts. Eventually Max cracked one into the top corner, but it was just a little too late to complete a comeback and the match ended 2-1. So the Wolves beat the Pumas, the Dog ate the Cat, but at least you gave them plenty of fur to spit out in the process boys!PUMAS v BECKENHAM TOWN - Away11 December 2011 With league fixtures proving difficult to organise, a friendly away to Beckenham Town was arranged for Sunday. Drier and warmer alternatives looked attractive on the day, but the Pumas had no intention of letting the conditions bother them. The opposition defence bothered them though. The boys found themselves up against perhaps the most committed defender they had faced this season. He was quick and strong and managed to disrupt the normal flow and rhythm of Max and Atrins attacking play. The Pumas were finding out how their opposition normally feels trying to score against them! Beckenham soon took advantage of the uncertainty they had managed to create and squeezed the opening goal past last weeks hero Rotimi. A team rejig soon followed. Thomas was brought into midfield, George and Charlie were restored to defence while usual striker Kai tried his luck up front. The Pumas soon wrested back control of the game, but half time arrived with Beckenham still a goal up. The boys continued to control possession and territory in the second half but their route to goal remained blocked. A change in tactics was required, so Thomas unleashed the teams new weapon the Youdenator a long throw that created havoc in the Beckenham box. The loose, bouncing ball was pounced on twice, first by Max and then by Kai, to turn the 0-1 deficit into a 2-1 lead. Beckenham were unable to respond, Delvin and Josh harrying and blocking in midfield to help make sure the remainder of the game was largely played in the Beckenham half. So well done boys, yet another hard-fought 2-1 victory and while not quite so heart-stopping as last week, the tension sure takes your supporters minds off the cold!PUMAS v DOVERHOUSE ATHLETIC - Away4 December 2011For those of a nervous disposition, the Pumas match away to Doverhouse Athletic on Sunday wasNOT the place to be. Fortunately, nerves afflict parent more than Puma and the boys closed out athrilling game, although this time owing more to hard work than the usual style.Driving all the way to Roehampton for an U8 football match on a Sunday morning is not one of lifesgreatest pleasures, however the boys still hit the ground running and before long George hadscored, lobbing in a goal from the halfway line so astonishing that David Beckham would want towatch it on YouTube.A very even contest ensued for the rest of the half with chances few and far between - Josh andThomas battling it out tirelessly in the middle of the park until the ever dangerous Max snatched asecond from inside the box just on half time. But any illusions of a comfortable second half were soon to be shattered. The Doverhouse boyswent for broke straight from the whistle, launching attack after attack. They pulled one goal backafter 5 minutes and poured forward, desperate for the equaliser. The Pumas looked to hit them onthe counter, Atrin threading some good balls through to Kai, but the opposition managed to keepthe Pumas striker out while continuously cranking up the pressure at the other end.Which was where all Rotimis quiet days in the Pumas goal were made up for in the space of 15hectic minutes. He saved shot after shot - some in rapid succession and then Doverhouse wereawarded a penalty. With spectators barely able to look, he saved it low to his left to preserve thePumas lead.Delvin, George and Charlie worked like Trojans at the back to make the save count, and in yet moredrama, the Doverhouse striker rounded the keeper only for Charlie to whisk the ball off his toes justas he was about to pull the trigger. So it ended in a 2-1 victory for the Pumas. The Doverhouse boys played brilliantly though - thePumas have their rearguard to thank for the win, especially the outstanding Rotimi.U8 PUMAS v EX-BLUES - Home13th November 2011 Recalling his time at Barcelona playing under Johann Cruyff, Gary Lineker once said he thought Cruyff would deliberately do something tactically bizarre in the first half in order to look like a genius when he fixed it in the second. The U8 Pumas may have had similar thoughts on Sunday. Hezs tactical master class began with OK, today defenders play in attack and attackers play in defense. Sadly, this clever plan didnt work too well, the boys grateful for only being 1-0 down at the break. Part two of the plan was duly implemented, and with normal positions restored, the Pumas laid siege to the Ex-Blues goal in the second half. Atrin soon scored, and he, Max, Thomas, Kai and Josh pressed frantically for the second while George, Charlie and Delvin at the back refused to let their opponents even cross the halfway line. Unfortunately the winner never quite came, with attack after attack being repelled by the oppositions well organised defense, while Rotimi could have had an afternoon kip in goal because he didnt get to touch the ball once. So it ended 1-1, the first game of the season the boys havent won, but with the four most recent scores now being 1-1, 3-1, 2-1, and 1-0 things certainly seem to be tightening up in the division!U8 PUMAS v ACTIVE 8 - away20th November 2011 A cold and misty morning greeted the boys at Active 8 this week, and having despatched a 6-man version of them 9-0 at home in warm October sunshine, they were eager to prove the first result had nothing to do with their depleted numbers, our home advantage or the weather. Active 8 clearly intended otherwise - this time round they had no fewer than 13 players show up. They could still only field seven of them of course, and it wasn't enough to prevent Josh giving the Pumas the lead in the first minute. Kai - a shortened version of Der Kaiser in more ways than one - soon added a second, before Active 8 pulled one back with a cracking free kick that gave Thomas no chance in goal. Fortunately Max restored the 2-goal cushion for the half time break with a lovely clean strike. From the restart it was clear the opposition was not going to take it lying down this time. They quickly forced a diving save from second half keeper Charlie, but still fell further behind when Max curled a corner straight in, making the score 4-1. Active 8 then scored the goal they had been threatening, but George, Delvin and Rotimi soon regained their customary grip on the opposing strike force, and Atrin finished them off, beautifully slotting home another on the stroke of full time. So a comfortable 5-2 victory in the end, but more evidence that the teams in the division are improving as the season goes on. Stay on your toes boys!
